I just got a chance to view this video entitled The Challenge of Change about the future of communications and computing as it appeared to the Bell System in 1961. I think the take away for me is that we go much faster in developing technology as a result of breaking up the system and letting new companies come in with new technology and products. I am not sure Bell Labs would ever have got us there.
